The Casual Criminalist is a podcast centered around doing deep dives on criminal cases, hosted by Simon Whistler. On August 9, 2022 The Casual Criminal released the episode on the Columbine Massacre. This episode, written by Liam Bird, was about the columbine massacre and the events that unfolded on that fateful day.
To anyone who doesn't know about the Columbine massacre; in short, two students who attending Columbine High School in Colorado brought guns and explosives in with the intent to cause as much harm as possible then ultimately committed suicide. I remember being in elementary school hearing about this but because I was so young I didn't really grasp the gravity of what took place. Also because there actually was a school near mine called "St. Columbanus" I was confused at first and thought everyone was talking about that school. Also knowing that this one event was the cause for routine drills I never really appreciated thinking it's just something schools did until I realized that schools didn't until this tragic event.
As does Simon and Liam, I won't say the murderer's names as they aren't important and I don't want people to think they have any importance. I this episode can be a great resource for people who want to learn about the subject as Liam did extensive research and gives a timeline of the events that took place. What I found interesting is how much public perception of the gunmen differs from the reality. Growing up I understood the public believed the two assailants to be lashing out at a world that treated them unkindly. In reality, and unfortunately less know, is they weren't bullied they were just two students who wanted to hurt people. It was one more so than the other but neither gunman should be excused from the actions they took.
